The Quiet Power of Influence
In today’s dynamic workplace, leadership transcends formal titles. The ability to influence—guiding others through trust, credibility, and emotional intelligence—is essential for driving change, fostering collaboration, and achieving results. Developing influence involves knowing how to consider your audience’s interests. Often, we attempt to influence (myself included) by putting our own objectives first. Instead, consider the other party’s motivations first.
5 Questions That Instantly Boost Your Influence
Whether you’re guiding a team, pitching a new idea, or leading through change, these five questions can dramatically elevate your ability to connect and persuade.
1. What’s the #1 thing my audience wants?
Influence starts with listening and understanding. Listen intently to what your audience wants. Speak directly to their deepest goal and ask open-ended questions to gain clarity.
2. How will my solution make them feel?
Emotions drive decisions. Highlight the confidence, relief, or motivation they’ll experience when they act on your recommendation. Make people feel heard.
3. How will life improve after taking action?
Paint the transformation. Show the tangible and emotional benefits they’ll gain by saying yes. Share relatable and memorable stories.
4. What will the skeptics say about this?
Anticipate resistance. Address doubts openly and build trust by showing you’ve thought it through. Use positive language, and others will do the same.
5. What is the competition unwilling to do?
This is your edge. Influence soars when you’re bold enough to go where others won’t—whether it’s having the tough conversation, offering extra support, or being radically honest.
What advice would you give someone who is working on their influencing skills?
