Drawing a Line in the Sand : Defining Your Non-Negotiables
What are your non-negotiables in the workplace?
We often talk about flexibility, adaptability, and going with the flow. But here’s the truth: some things should never be compromised. It wasn’t until one of my fellow coaches shared her non-negotiables for returning to work, after maternity leave, that I stopped to ask myself about my own. Thank you to Bridget Cincotta, who opened my eyes to the possibilities of what can happen when you know exactly what you need.

Perhaps it's a generational thing, where Gen Xers have always tried to fit it all in and focus on career growth. Younger generations think differently about drawing a line in the sand. I took the time to explore the motivations of Millennials and Gen Zers, and the data paints a picture of clear intentions, changing expectations, and a future of hope. This Deloitte Gen Z and Millennial Survey opened my eyes to learning how different generations approach their careers and expectations of the workplace. https://www.deloitte.com/content/dam/assets-shared/docs/campaigns/2025/2025-genz-millennial-survey.pdf
Your non-negotiables are the boundaries, values, or conditions that protect your energy, integrity, and well-being. And they look different for everyone.
Some examples:
I need an environment where I can show up as me—not a version of who I think I’m supposed to be.
I care about my work and give it my all, but I also need space to recharge. When my time is respected, I show up more focused, creative, and committed.
I thrive in environments where leaders guide, not control. When a company invests in my development, I will deliver results.
Knowing your non-negotiables helps you make smarter career decisions, set healthier boundaries, and build a more aligned professional life.
What’s one non-negotiable you’ve discovered the hard way—or the best way?
Let’s open the conversation. Someone might need to hear what you’ve learned.
